Europe's most discreet business hub
With around 32,100 residents, Zug is one of Switzerland's smallest cantonal capitals and at the same time one of Europe's most powerful business locations. The lowest cantonal corporate taxes in Switzerland (effectively around 12%), the central location between Zürich and Luzern, and a highly efficient administration with fast approval processes have made Zug a preferred domicile for international corporations. Accessibility is excellent: Zürich can be reached by train in 25 minutes, and Zurich Airport in under an hour.
The density of company headquarters per resident is higher in Zug than anywhere else in Switzerland: around 130,000 cantonal residents are matched by more than 20,000 registered companies. In addition to well-known large corporations, the canton hosts thousands of holding companies, trading firms and financial service providers that benefit from the low tax burden and discreet business environment. The so-called Crypto Valley, with hundreds of blockchain and cryptocurrency firms, has established Zug internationally as an innovation location since 2017.
Glencore, Crypto Valley and 20,000 companies
Glencore, one of the world's largest commodity traders, has its headquarters in neighbouring Baar. Trafigura, one of the world's largest independent commodity traders, and other commodity-trading firms are also based in the region. Siemens Switzerland has its headquarters in Zug and employs more than 1,000 people at the location. Roche Diagnostics (Rotkreuz site) and Johnson & Johnson (Zug site) form a strong industrial counterweight to the finance and trading sectors.
Crypto Valley, a cluster of blockchain and cryptocurrency firms around Zug, has made the city internationally known since the Ethereum Foundation settled there. Bitcoin Suisse, Cardano and hundreds of other Web3 companies are based here. Zug's authorities were the first worldwide to accept Bitcoin as a payment method for administrative fees. They are joined by numerous FinTech startups, venture capital firms such as Crypto Valley Venture Capital and specialised law firms that serve the company network with regulatory and compliance expertise.
Holding companies, startups and local commerce
Nowhere in Switzerland are so many company headquarters concentrated in such a small area. Many of these companies have only a small local presence, but they often hold substantial decision budgets and international reach. For providers of specialised services, law, fiduciary services, IT security, management consulting and corporate services, Zug is a demanding market with above-average order values. Demand for specialised services such as blockchain consulting, international tax planning and relocation services is particularly high here.
At the same time, alongside the corporate world, there is a local commercial sector made up of hospitality, trades and regional service providers serving the high purchasing power of Zug's population. V-Zug, the Swiss manufacturer of household appliances, has its headquarters in Zug and is relevant both as a local industrial employer and as an SMI mid-cap. Zuger Messe and blockchain conferences, such as Crypto Valley Conference, create opportunities for personal exchange with decision-makers from both worlds.
Zug's business culture is international, discreet and efficiency-oriented. Decisions are made quickly, but the first contact must be professional and substantive. Small talk is less important than a clear value proposition. In Crypto Valley, an Anglo-Saxon, startup-shaped communication style dominates.
